GST return filing fees: government fee vs our fee
The GST portal charges nothing to file a return. You pay the government extra only when you file late (late fee) or pay tax late (interest).
| Cost item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Government fee to file GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, CMP-08 or GSTR-9 | ₹0 | Filing on gst.gov.in is free. The tax itself is paid to the government, not to us. |
| Our fee – Monthly Filer | ₹399/month or ₹3,999/year + GST | GSTR-1 + GSTR-3B with GSTR-2B check |
| Our fee – Quarterly (QRMP) | ₹499/quarter or ₹1,299/year + GST | Quarterly GSTR-1 + GSTR-3B with GSTR-2B check |
| Our fee – Composition | ₹499/quarter or ₹1,299/year + GST | CMP-08 every quarter |
| Our fee – Nil return | ₹299 + GST per return | Monthly, quarterly (QRMP) or composition filers with no activity in the period |
| Our fee – GSTR-9 annual return | ₹2,000 + GST | Per annual return; GSTR-9C is quoted separately |
| GSTR-9C, GSTR-4, pending returns or notices | Quoted on request | Depends on turnover, number of periods and the state of your records |
| Late fee (government) | ₹50/day; ₹20/day for nil | Capped by turnover — see the late fee table |
| Interest (government) | 18% a year | On tax paid after the due date, for the days of delay |
No limit on the number of invoices, provided you share your GSTR-1 data duly filled in our prescribed format (Tally data is also accepted). If the data is not in the prescribed format, an additional fee applies for preparing it — our team can help you prepare it in the prescribed format.

Late fee and interest on GST returns
Late fees run for every day of delay until the return is filed, and are charged separately for each return. Amounts below are CGST + SGST combined.
| Return | Late fee per day | Maximum per return |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-3B or GSTR-1 – nil return | ₹20 | ₹500 |
| GSTR-3B or GSTR-1 – turnover up to ₹1.5 crore | ₹50 | ₹2,000 |

| GSTR-9 – turnover ₹5–20 crore | ₹100 | 0.04% of turnover in the state |
| GSTR-9 – turnover above ₹20 crore | ₹200 | 0.5% of turnover in the state |
| CMP-08 | No late fee | Interest applies on tax paid late |
Interest at 18% a year
- Charged under Section 50 on tax paid after the due date, on the part paid in cash.
- From 2026 the portal auto-calculates this interest in Table 5.1 of GSTR-3B; it can be increased but not reduced.
- ITC wrongly availed and used also attracts interest at 18%.
Other consequences of not filing
- GSTR-1 cannot be filed while the previous GSTR-3B is pending.
- E-way bills get blocked after two tax periods of unfiled returns.
- Your buyers lose ITC if your GSTR-1 is not filed.
- Registration can be cancelled after six months of non-filing.
GSTR-3B hard-locking and the 3-year time-bar
Two rule changes now decide how you correct mistakes and how long you can wait to file. Both are already live on the GST portal.
GSTR-3B hard-locking
- From the July 2025 tax period, the tax liability auto-filled in GSTR-3B from GSTR-1, GSTR-1A and IFF cannot be edited in GSTR-3B.
- From the November 2025 tax period, inter-state supplies in Table 3.2 are also auto-filled and locked.
- Errors must be fixed in GSTR-1A before GSTR-3B is filed, or in a later GSTR-1.
- ITC in Table 4 is auto-filled from GSTR-2B. As of October 2026 it is not hard-locked, but any change must be backed by your records.
3-year time-bar on filing returns
- Since the July 2025 tax period, the portal blocks GSTR-1/IFF, GSTR-3B, GSTR-4, GSTR-5, GSTR-6, GSTR-7, GSTR-8 and GSTR-9 once three years pass from their due date.
- This comes from the Finance Act, 2023 changes to Sections 37, 39, 44 and 52 of the CGST Act.
- Example: the GSTR-3B for September 2023 (due 20 October 2023) cannot be filed after 20 October 2026.
- The tax does not go away — the department can still assess and demand it with interest and penalty.
ITC and GSTR-2B reconciliation: how we protect your credit
You can claim ITC only on invoices that appear in your GSTR-2B. Since the Invoice Management System (IMS) arrived, what lands in GSTR-2B depends on actions you take every month.
How ITC works now
- Supplier invoices appear in IMS, where you accept, reject or keep pending.
- Records left without action are deemed accepted when GSTR-2B is generated on the 14th.
- From the October 2025 tax period, “pending” is allowed only for certain documents, such as credit notes, and for one month (one quarter for QRMP).
- ITC of a financial year must be claimed by 30 November of the next year, or the date you file the annual return, if earlier.
What our reconciliation covers
- Purchase register matched with GSTR-2B, invoice by invoice
- Wrong or duplicate invoices rejected in IMS
- Suppliers who have not filed GSTR-1 flagged to you
- Blocked credits and unpaid bills (180 days) reversed
- Rates and HSN checked after the September 2025 GST rate changes (5%, 18% and 40% slabs)
Documents required for GST return filing
Excel, Tally/Busy exports, PDFs or clear phone photos all work. Share them on WhatsApp or email.
Regular (monthly / QRMP)
- GST portal login (or OTP access)
- Sales invoices or sales register
- Purchase invoices or purchase register
- Credit / debit notes issued
- Expenses under reverse charge
Composition
- GST portal login
- Total sales (turnover) for the quarter
- Purchases under reverse charge
- Previous CMP-08 / GSTR-4, if filed elsewhere
Annual return (GSTR-9 / 9C)
- All GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B of the year
- Books of accounts / audited financials
- ITC register and GSTR-2B for the year
- HSN-wise sales summary
Pending / late returns
- List of periods not filed
- Sales and purchase data for each period
- Any GST notice received
- Bank details for tax, late fee & interest
Common GST return filing mistakes
- Incorrect GSTIN entered for a customer or supplier
- Sales reported in GSTR-1 not matching the sales reported in GSTR-3B
- Wrong tax rate or HSN code applied to a supply
- Confusing nil-rated, exempt and zero-rated supplies
- Missing tax payable under reverse charge (RCM)
- Claiming input tax credit that is not in GSTR-2B or is blocked
- Skipping nil returns in a period with no sales

GST return filing guides
GST return filing – frequently asked questions
What is GST return filing online?
It is the monthly, quarterly or annual submission of your sales, purchases, input tax credit and tax paid on the GST portal (gst.gov.in). Regular taxpayers file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, composition taxpayers file CMP-08 and GSTR-4, and most businesses above ₹2 crore turnover also file the annual return GSTR-9.
What are the due dates for GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?
Monthly filers: GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the next month. QRMP filers: GSTR-1 by the 13th of the month after the quarter and GSTR-3B by the 22nd or 24th, depending on the state, with PMT-06 tax payments by the 25th for the first two months.
What is the late fee for GSTR-3B and GSTR-1?
₹50 per day (CGST + SGST), or ₹20 per day for a nil return. The maximum is ₹500 for nil returns and ₹2,000, ₹5,000 or ₹10,000 for others, depending on whether turnover is up to ₹1.5 crore, ₹1.5–5 crore or above ₹5 crore. Interest at 18% a year is charged separately on tax paid late.
Do I need to file a GST return if there were no sales?
Yes. A registered business must file a nil GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B (or nil CMP-08 under composition) even when there is no business activity. Nil returns can also be filed by SMS. Not filing attracts a late fee of up to ₹500 per return and can lead to cancellation of registration. We file nil returns for ₹299 + GST per return, for monthly, quarterly and composition filers.
What is the QRMP scheme and who can opt for it?
QRMP (Quarterly Return Monthly Payment) lets businesses with aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore in the previous financial year file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly, while paying tax monthly through PMT-06. B2B invoices for the first two months can be uploaded through IFF so buyers get credit on time.
Can I edit GSTR-3B after the hard-locking rule?
Not the auto-filled tax liability. From the July 2025 tax period, the liability flowing from GSTR-1, GSTR-1A and IFF is locked in GSTR-3B, and from November 2025 Table 3.2 is also locked. Corrections must be made in GSTR-1A before filing GSTR-3B, or in a later GSTR-1. ITC in Table 4 is auto-filled from GSTR-2B but, as of October 2026, has not been hard-locked.
Can I file a GST return that is more than 3 years old?
No. Since the July 2025 tax period, the GST portal does not allow GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-4, GSTR-9 and certain other returns to be filed after three years from their due date. The tax liability still remains and can be demanded by the department, so pending returns should be filed as early as possible.
Is GSTR-9 mandatory for small businesses?
No. Under Notification 15/2025-Central Tax, filing GSTR-9 is optional for taxpayers with aggregate turnover up to ₹2 crore, from FY 2024-25 onwards. GSTR-9C is required only when turnover exceeds ₹5 crore. The due date for FY 2025-26 is 31 December 2026. Composition taxpayers file GSTR-4 instead, due by 30 June after the financial year (from FY 2024-25 onwards).
How is ITC matched with GSTR-2B and IMS?
Supplier invoices appear in the Invoice Management System, where you accept, reject or keep them pending. GSTR-2B is generated on the 14th from these actions, and only ITC shown in GSTR-2B can be claimed in GSTR-3B. We match your purchase register with GSTR-2B every period and flag missing or wrong invoices.
How much do you charge for GST return filing, and is there an invoice limit?
Our professional fee is ₹399 + GST a month (or ₹3,999 + GST a year) for monthly filers, and ₹499 + GST a quarter (or ₹1,299 + GST a year) for QRMP and composition taxpayers. A nil return is ₹299 + GST per return and the GSTR-9 annual return is ₹2,000 + GST. There is no limit on the number of invoices, provided you share your GSTR-1 data duly filled in our prescribed format; Tally data is also accepted. If the data is not in the prescribed format, an additional fee applies for preparing it, and our team can help you prepare it in the prescribed format. There is no government fee for filing; late fee and interest apply only when a return or tax is late.
What are the most common GST return filing mistakes?
Entering a wrong GSTIN for a customer or supplier, reporting different sales in GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, applying the wrong tax rate or HSN code, mixing up nil-rated, exempt and zero-rated supplies, missing reverse charge tax, claiming input tax credit that is not in GSTR-2B or is blocked, and skipping nil returns.
What is the difference between nil-rated, exempt and zero-rated supplies in GST returns?
Nil-rated and exempt supplies carry no GST and are reported separately from taxable supplies. Zero-rated supplies are exports and supplies to SEZ units: they are taxable at a zero rate and input tax credit remains available. Reporting them under the wrong head misstates turnover and input tax credit.
